Tylosin is a white or off - white powder, with a faint characteristic odor. It has relatively low solubility in water but dissolves well in methanol, ethanol, and other organic solvents. As a macrolide antibiotic, tylosin has a complex ring - like structure, which gives it a broad - spectrum antibacterial activity. In veterinary medicine, it is widely used to treat and prevent various bacterial infections in livestock and poultry. For example, it is effective against respiratory infections in cattle, swine dysentery in pigs, and chronic respiratory diseases in poultry. Tylosin acts by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, thus inhibiting protein synthesis and ultimately leading to the death of bacteria. It can be administered orally, through injection, or added to animal feed. In addition, tylosin also has applications in the field of aquaculture, helping to control bacterial diseases in fish and shrimp. However, like all antibiotics, tylosin should be used rationally.
