Chemically, it belongs to the avermectin family, which is known for its potent antiparasitic properties. Ivermectin is widely used in both human and veterinary medicine. In human health, it is a crucial drug for treating several parasitic diseases. It is highly effective against onchocerciasis (river blindness) and lymphatic filariasis, two debilitating tropical diseases caused by parasitic worms. By binding to specific receptors in the parasites' nervous systems, it increases the release of inhibitory neurotransmitters, leading to paralysis and death of the parasites. In veterinary medicine, ivermectin is used to control a wide variety of internal and external parasites in livestock, pets, and horses. It can treat intestinal worms, mites, lice, and ticks, thereby improving the health and productivity of animals.
