Ethylene glycol is a colorless, odorless, and viscous liquid with a sweet taste, though it is highly toxic if ingested. It has excellent solubility in water and many organic solvents. Boiling at around 197.3°C, it has a relatively high boiling point, which makes it suitable for various industrial applications. In the automotive industry, it is a primary component of antifreeze and coolant mixtures. It lowers the freezing point and raises the boiling point of water, protecting vehicle engines from extreme temperatures. In the chemical industry, ethylene glycol is a crucial raw material for manufacturing polyester fibers, resins, and plastics. For instance, it is used in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is widely used in the packaging of beverages and food products. In the textile industry, it helps in the production of synthetic fibers, enhancing their softness and durability. In the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air - Conditioning) systems, it is used in chilled water systems for heat transfer.
