Phenyl salicylate, also known as salol, is a white, crystalline solid with a faint, characteristic odor. It has a relatively low solubility in water but is soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether. Melting at around 43 - 44°C, it has a moderate melting point. In the pharmaceutical field, it has been used as an antiseptic and antipyretic agent. It can help in reducing fever and preventing infections in some medical applications. In the food industry, it can be used as a flavoring agent in certain products, imparting a unique taste. In the cosmetics industry, it is used in some sunscreen formulations. It can absorb ultraviolet light in the UV - B range, providing protection against sunburn. In the plastics industry, phenyl salicylate can act as a plasticizer.
