Barite, chemically known as barium sulfate (BaSO?), is a heavy, crystalline mineral that typically appears as colorless or white, but can also be tinted various colors due to impurities. It has a high specific gravity, making it feel much heavier than most common rocks. Barite is insoluble in water and most acids, which contributes to its stability in different environments. In the oil and gas industry, barite is the primary weighting agent in drilling muds. By increasing the density of the drilling fluid, it helps to control wellbore pressures, preventing blowouts during drilling operations. In the paint and coatings industry, barite is used as a filler. It improves the durability, opacity, and weather - resistance of paints, while also reducing the cost by replacing more expensive pigments. In the rubber and plastics industries, barite is added to enhance the strength, hardness, and weight of products. It can also act as a radiation shield; in medical and nuclear facilities, barite - containing materials are used to protect against X - rays and gamma rays.
